50th Anniversary Celebrations Grand Lodge of South Africa

In May 1772 Lodge de Goede Hoop, the first Lodge in Africa, was consecrated under the Grand East of the Netherlands. After 189 interesting and challenging years and the opening of numerous new Lodges, circumstances at the time saw the Netherlandic Lodges in South Africa deciding that the time had now arrived where it was necessary to break away from the Netherlands. As a result, Africa’s first sovereign Grand Lodge, being the Grand Lodge of South Africa (GLSA), was duly consecrated on 22 April 1961.

Celebrations took place over the weekend from Friday 19th to Sunday 21st August 2011. Twenty three Grand Lodges were presented by their Grand Masters or their representatives.

On Friday night a Jubilee Banquet was held at Kelvin Grove which was filled to almost overcrowding.

The Grand Master of the Grand Lodge of South Africa, M W Bro Armiston Watson welcomed all present and thanked them for attending this great occasion.

During the evening presents were exchanged and good wishes expressed for the future of the GLSA.

The Grand Master of the Grand East of the Netherlands M W Bro W Meijer was present to congratulate its offspring Grand Lodge.

Saturday dawned a perfect day and allowed the ladies to be taken to the top of Table Mountain for a perfect view of Cape Town and its surroundings.

On Saturday afternoon the Annual General Meeting took place and all delegations were received with Masonic Protocol. As this was the also end of the first three year term of M W Bro Watson he was obligated and re-installed by proclamation after which his Grand  Commissioned Officers and Grand  Officers were obligated and invested.

Saturday evening was set aside for the Masonic Spring Ball.

The Spring Ball has been held by the Southern Division for thirty two years without interruption and the proceeds are used to assist in the maintenance and establishment of homes for needy Freemasons, one of which has been made fit to house quadriplegics.

While many of the delegates returned to heir homes on Sunday, those remaining behind were taken on a bus tour of the Cape Peninsula followed by lunch at a wine farm.

This ended a great weekend of celebrations and we trust that all those present reached their homes and families safely.
